The ruins of the forum are the best part of Rome. I spent an entire day mesmerized by the majesty of this vanished civilization. Even as ruins, they surpass the architecture the modern world has to offer.
It can be if you ruthlessly curate. I find doom and nihilism to be extremely toxic, and had to recently remove someone as a result. Relentless blackpill narratives have really done a number on me mentally and emotionally.
That is very true. I've dipped my toes into the inner ring of hell that is X to promote my Substack work, and it's an endless cascade of AI-generated misinformation and political venom spewing. It reminded me why I originally went off the grid years ago, for my mental and emotional well-being.
Well, unfortunately internet blackpilling and Christian defeatism are only a small part of my life and why I am stuck where I am. The two only serve to catalyze and ruminate the deeper, darker parts of my youth.
“A symbol is not a curtain on which the eye comes to rest; rather it is like a window, through which we see something else…It could be that our world is losing a belief in symbols. One wonders if there is not a parallel decline in our civilization between courtesy in human relations and decoration in architecture."
Beauty is more than just aesthetic; architecture more than just structure.
We NEED beauty back in cities.
We need beauty everywhere
I've dreamed about taking 500,000 men, bulldozing the downtown area and rebuilding it in Greco-Roman and Gothic architecture.

This calls to mind a quote by Fulton Sheen:
“A symbol is not a curtain on which the eye comes to rest; rather it is like a window, through which we see something else…It could be that our world is losing a belief in symbols. One wonders if there is not a parallel decline in our civilization between courtesy in human relations and decoration in architecture."

Beauty represents the belief of society in themselves and greater purpose. When they lose that so does decline architecture and everything else.
